A northland institution with some of the best steaks in the region, S Rod’s Steak House (301 E. Route 66, 928/635-2671, www.rods-steakhouse.com, 11am-9:30pm Mon.-Sat., $12-25) has been operating at the same site since 1946. The food is excellent, the staff is friendly and professional, and the menus are shaped like steers.

The Pine Country Restaurant (107 N. Grand Canyon Blvd., 928/635-9718, http://pinecountryrestaurant.com, 6:30am-9:30pm daily, $5-10) is a family-style place that serves good diner-style food and homemade pies. Check out the beautiful paintings of the Grand Canyon on the walls.

Cruiser’s Route 66 Bar & Grill (233 W. Route 66, 928/635-2445, www.cruisers66.com, 7am-10:30am and 11am-close daily, $7-15) offers a diverse menu, with superior barbecue ribs, burgers, fajitas, pulled-pork sandwiches, and homemade chili. They have a full bar and offer live music most nights. During the summer evenings, the patio is lively and fun.

For something a bit more upscale and romantic, try the Red Raven Restaurant (135 W. Route 66, 928/635-4980, www.redravenrestaurant.com, 11am-2pm and 5pm-close daily, $11-25), a charming little place along Route 66 with big windows looking out on the bustling sidewalk and the tourists strolling by. It serves delicious and inventive dishes: steak wraps, Guinness stew, tasty lamb, sweet potato fries, and Southwest egg rolls, to name just a few. The restaurant also has a deep beer list with selections mainly from Arizona and Colorado, and a good wine selection heavy on Italy and California. Make a reservation for dinner.

The vegetarian’s best bet this side of downtown Flagstaff is the Dara Thai Café (145 W. Route 66, 928/635-2201, 11am-2pm and 5pm-9pm Mon.-Sat., $5-10), an agreeable little spot in the Grand Canyon Hotel. They serve a variety of fresh and flavorful Thai favorites and offer quite a few meat-free dishes.
